Language as Projection, Not Substrate

1. Introduction

Health systems treat language as state.

Observations are rewritten as summaries. Events are replaced by labels. Narrative descriptions substitute for assertions. Over time, language becomes authoritative and original state becomes inaccessible.

This produces distortion. Interpretations persist as facts. Uncertainty disappears. Automation trains on narrative artifacts rather than underlying state.

This paper formalizes language as projection, not substrate.

2. Language Is Not Canonical

Canonical state consists of assertions bound to time, authority, and provenance.

Assertions may be described in language, but they are not defined by language. Linguistic representations vary by domain, context, observer, and time. No linguistic normalization can be treated as canonical without inheriting ambiguity.

Canonical state is language-independent.

3. Interpretation

Interpretation consumes canonical state and produces meaning.

Interpretation may classify, summarize, explain, predict, or narrate. It is contextual and revisable. Multiple interpretations of the same canonical state may coexist.

Interpretation proposes meaning. It does not assert truth.

Derived interpretations may be incorrect or incomplete. They may not modify canonical state.

4. Projections

A projection is a structured representation derived from canonical state for a specific purpose.

Projections include linguistic narratives, visual summaries, analytical views, algorithmic representations, and interface renderings.

Projections are disposable and reproducible. Loss of a projection does not affect canonical integrity.

Projections serve consumers. They do not define the substrate.

5. Failure Modes

When projection is treated as state, predictable failures occur.

Summaries replace events. Labels replace observations. Normalization erases uncertainty. Revision overwrites prior meaning. Compression hides contradiction.

These failures arise from architecture, not implementation.

6. Interface and Substrate

Interfaces exist to facilitate interaction. Substrate exists to preserve state.

Interfaces optimize comprehension and efficiency. Substrate optimizes integrity, causality, auditability, and longitudinal integrity.

Coupling interface representations to canonical state collapses both. Interfaces become rigid. Substrate becomes mutable.

7. Multiplicity

Multiple projections may coexist without canonical privilege.

No narrative resolves disagreement at the substrate level. Authority governs assertion, not interpretation.

Disagreement is preserved structurally rather than resolved linguistically.

8. Downstream Consumption

Reasoning, analytics, governance, and automation consume projections.

These domains operate on interpreted views of canonical state and apply their own logic and evaluation criteria.

No downstream system may write interpretation back into canonical form.

9. Invariants

The following invariants hold:

  • Canonical state is language-independent
  • Interpretation is derived
  • Projections are disposable and reproducible
  • Interpretation cannot be written back into canonical state
  • Narrative disagreement is preserved
  • Multiple projections coexist without canonical privilege
  • Interfaces cannot mutate substrate

Violating any invariant collapses semantic integrity.

10. Discussion

Language is necessary and unstable.

Treating language as substrate guarantees distortion under scale, revision, and automation. Separating canonical state from interpretation preserves integrity while allowing unlimited representational flexibility.

HealthMemory does not reject language. It refuses to depend on it.
